Enter to win a copy of Diary 2010 + a visit with Fantazya - CONTEST CLOSED

Guess what?! It's time for a new Thursday Giveaway
If you'd like to see the winner of this morning's drawing for the J. Brown print click here

Lucky Me! I had the good fortune to take part in the creation of today's prize. Lucky You! This is your chance to win it!! The new Thursday Giveaway prize is a copy of Diary 2010. This functional piece of art had a number of collaborators from all around the globe.

What is Diary 2010? It is the brainchild of photographer/ fashion designer Lucy Baribeau from Fantazya. For the 3rd year, she sent out a call to artists around the web. (I heard about it from Ewian an artist & blogger from Norway). Each participant signed up for at least 1 day in the year. The task was to create a page in black in white that would be artistic ,yet would function as a usable diary page. Each page is dated in 3 languages (English, French & Spanish).

To see a list of participating artists & more pages from the Diary, go to www.fantazya.ca/diary2010.html. You can also order 1 printed and bound or on CD. I've scanned a couple of pages from my copy to show you here. I'm really happy with how it came out & picked some up for gifts (good thing my family doesn't follow my blog )

I had so much fun making my page I decide to do a couple more. You can see my 3 designs in this July blog post.

You can also purchase the diary from Lucy's Etsy shop, Fantazaya. The diaries she sells there have wonderful decorated covers. The diary that has been donated for next Thursday's random drawing has a plain cover that you can decorate yourself. It measures approx. 4.25" x 7" and is spiral bound. It has 382 pages (364 date pages, 12 month pages, 8 address pages, 3 note pages, 2 introduction pages & 2 year pages) each with a unique design.

Prize looks just like this except it has a clear spiral binding.

It's easy to enter next Thursday's Random Drawing:

Just leave a comment on this blog before 1 a.m. (EST) on 11/19 and you are in. It is that easy. There will be 1 winner picked by Random.org. Just make sure you have contact info in your profile or comment. Contest is open worldwide. Shipping is free.

I asked Lucy to stop by & share a little info about herself. She has a variety of things happening online. Click on any of the links below to see what she is up to:

LB:
I am a fashion designer and I especially love recycling, vintage, and organic materials.

LB: And because I don't like to do always the same kind of art, I play with crafting, photography,

...painting, making diary projects, etc... This is why my Etsy shop is so diversified !

LB: My house has a double living room. I took one to make my studio and I made a stair to easily go in the attic, where I place almost all my material and items ready to send. My attic is so big ! I'm amassing my money and next spring, I plan to renovate it to make my studio there... for me this is a very beautiful project !

I know it will come out fabulous, Lucy, like so many of your wonderful projects! I'd love to see photos when you are done, if you'd like to share. I always enjoy before & after pictures. Many thanks for stopping by to share your studio space & creations with us. And special thanks for sponsoring next Thursday's contest! Also, I am looking forward to making pages for Diary 2011 - when do we begin??

Readers, if you get a chance please stop by & visit Lucy's links. I've enjoyed them all & her Flickr is a "must see" if you're into photography.

Thanks to everyone who entered! It was fun to read all of your sticker ideas. If you are curious, Jim said "If I won this, I'd probably print the words "I love YOU. (yes...you)" and anonymously leave the stickers around work to make people happy (I work in a hospital...and a lot of folks there could use a pat on the back)." Now how cool is that!

IF - Hollow

Found in fairy stories throughout Scandinavia, she is also known as skogsrå and holda, among other names. She is a beautiful woman in front but her backside looks like a hollow tree. Some Huldra also have tails, often either cow or fox. Should you encounter a huldra, it is considered dangerous to comment on her tail, unless it is done with the utmost delicacy. For instance, if you politely tell her her "garter" or "slip" is showing she may grant you healthy cattle or good fishing according to legend. It is also said that if she blows on a hunter's rifle, he will never miss a shot.

The huldra is often considered a protector of woods and woodland critters. A seductive creature, she is famous for collecting human lovers as well as for her mercurial nature. She can be just as easily pleased as offended. And you do NOT want to offend her.

She also has a reputation for stealing children & leaving changelings. You can find out more about this lovely lady by clicking on the above links. There are also some entertaining folktales around the web.

As soon as I saw that the Illustration Friday prompt was Hollow, I remembered this creature - of all the faeries I read about as a kid, for some reason she really gave me the willies. Couldn't recall her name, but google settled that while distracting me with some wonderful tales. Originally I was going to make a little clay sculpture, but then I remembered this cool fern-patterned paper I've had for ages. I also checked DeviantArt for some models & found that the stock photos of Tw1sted Truth & WakenTheDead Stock fit the bill

If you get a chance CLICK HERE & see what other fun pieces have been submitted to Illustration Friday this week. Or even better, submit your own!

I've decided I'd better start paying more attention to my neglected Etsy Shops, so this piece is now available. Just click HERE for info & detailed pics of The Huldra. Hopefully I'll get some more pieces listed this week.

Final note: New giveaway this week. 1 random winner to be drawn on 7/16. Prize is 250 customized stamps from UPrinting.com. What would you do with 250 free stickers, designed by You? Just leave an answer in comments to be entered in drawing. The prize sponsor, Uprinting.com does have a couple of disclaimers. CLICK HERE for details

Thursday Giveaway part 2 - 2 Chances To Win

Welcome ! It's that day of the week again!

You know, the 1 where you get to see what new Thursday Giveaway is up for grabs. Hold onto your hats, we’ve got double the fun this week!

Yep, 1 talented artist, 6 original ACEOs and 2 winners!!

Melanie has a fabulous online etsy shop, Studio27. She offers a colorful variety of artwork in several mediums. There are original paintings, cards, swirly linocut prints, and ACEOs. I love all the vibrant colors & movement in her artwork. Plus her prices are amazing!!

A Mother's Love ACEO

Melanie’s wonderful creations seem to flow in a series. Today’s prizes come from 2 different series, so there will be 2 separate winners picked next Thursday (6/25). Woo Hoo x 2!

To Seek His Fortune ACEO

Both prizes are sets of ACEOs. What is an ACEO? I’ll let Melanie explain:

“It is a tiny, collectible work of art in any medium. The only requirement is that it be 2.5 x 3.5 inches, but it can be oriented in either direction. They can be placed into photo magnet sleeves to decorate the fridge or a file cabinet at work, they can also be made into cards or framed......the possibilities are endless!”

Cherish Every Moment ACEO

The 1st prize is a set of 4 ACEOs from her collection that I’ll call the Family Portraits. Melanie has altered prints from some very cool vintage & antique photographs and embellished them with text from old books. The layers of text add a poetic touch to the intriguing images. In her words:

"For these original mixed media collages I used a prints of vintage 1940's photos, and then collaged text from old books onto them, and then affixed them to bristol board paper."

Sisters ACEO

After random winner #1 has been selected, a 2nd winner will be picked. The Next Prize is a pair of ACEOs from Melanie’s Goddess Series. This fabulous series is a truly eloquent collection and a steady seller at Studio27. Melanie can explain it better than I:

"An Everyday Goddess is the story of a woman - an everyday woman with a delicate spirit. She believes in Karma and celebrates the magic of living every day....and sometimes her imagination gets the best of her! These are ACEO (Art Card Editions and Originals) original, being 2.5" x 3.5" in dimension. I used marker, ink, colored pencil and collaged text (patiently found in old books) on bristol board paper."

Darkness Falls ACEO - from Goddess Series

I don’t know about you guys, but I always enjoy hearing more about the creators behind such interesting art. I asked Melanie to share some info about herself:

"I love the magical moments in life......watching raindrops as they ripple in puddles, blowing bubbles, watching the crescent moon rise in the twilight sky. It is always these simple moments that take my breath away.

I studied art at the Montserrat College of Art in Massachusetts and the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine. My work is very inspired by indigenous and tribal art. I am very fortunate to live in a beautiful little cabin in the woods....so the forest world around me also inspires my work."

Winter ACEO - #45 in Goddess Series

By the way, check back in a few days for a peek into the real Studio27, where this talented artist works her magic!

Many thanks to Melanie for her generous donations and for taking the time to share with ArtSnark’s readers. Plus an extra large helping of gratitude for helping me out of a last minute bind today!!!

You’ve seen the prizes (the ACEOs pictured here). Now jump aboard the giveaway train! Shipping is free & this giveaway is open to international entries as well. To be entered in both random drawings: just leave a comment on this blog before noon (EST) on Thursday 6/25. At that time, the 2 winners will be picked using Random.org. C’mon...play along!! You know you want to :D

Just a note: Please be sure your contact info is correct. You don't have to leave an email, as long as I can track you down easily through blogger. If I do not hear from you within 10 days of your name being drawn, I'll go back through the list and choose an alternate winner.

Thursday Giveaway part 2 - You Are So Lucky!

New Thursday means a new prize, so let’s get rolling!
Remember Karen over at Will Oaks Studio?

You made her so happy with all of your generous comments, that she’s decided to play with us again. Woo Hoo! This week’s Thursday Giveaway prize is a $20 gift certificate for use in either her fabulous Etsy or Artfire shops. (More details at end of this post)

She’s also agreed to share with us a bit more about herself and her beautiful jewelry:

"I've been a working artist all of my adult life, with art degrees and all of that. The first few decades of my career (I got an early start AND I've seen a few birthdays...) were in sculpture--particularly sculpture that incorporated my hand made paper. I did large installations and dimensional wall pieces and worked with museums and galleries for exhibition. About 15 years ago, I became more serious about making "artists books" and these were also exhibited, are in private and public collections, and were much smaller in scale...but after almost 30 years of hand papermaking and using paper, my interests began to change.

I began to experiment with "wire, stones, glass and fiber" about 5 years ago because a friend turned me on to "beading" and, as a long time lover of jewelry (and collector and wearer!), I was very intrigued. You see, the past 6 years, I've been back on the "family farm" in my town of origin after many years of traveling and living all over the U.S. and Europe. It's been a challenging change for me as I began caring for my father whose health was failing, and ended up running our farm and seasonal campground. And taking over one of the bedrooms here which has evolved into my new studio.

I've discovered I just love pearls and tend towards natural materials including silver, copper and stones....but I also have an extreme fondness for Czech pressed glass, so these materials, often pulled together with fibers and leather, are my mainstays. I get a lot of my inspiration from nature and have "practiced" photography since I was a child...and so am very happy with the speed and ease now available with digital photography. Since I'm living in such a lovely place, and since I tend to plant things where ever I live, the gardens here have really been an incredible inspiration for me this Spring.

Although I work as an artist...I love engineering challenges and for me, wearable art pieces often give me plenty of those! I want my pieces to "wear well" and besides choice materials, I pride myself on careful and beautiful craftsmanship. I hope my pieces give the customer a lot of pleasure to look at and to wear and that they will serve well for many years to come. My work is available online at both my Etsy shop WillOaksStudio.etsy.com and at my ArtFire shop WillOaksStudio.artfire.com. Stop by any time! If you're curious about the campground, the gardens, the farm and the "messy business of making art behind the gallery views" do check my blog at willoaksstudio.blogspot.com "

Now how cool is that?

What Karen hasn’t mentioned here is that she has some shows coming up. She could really use some input on which of her pieces YOU like best, and why. If you’re willing to help, take a peek in her Etsy & Artfire shops. Then leave a comment either here or on her blog as to which pieces or styles you like the best. I must stress it is NOT necessary to do this to be entered this week’s random drawing. You are just giving Karen some feedback so she can choose which pieces to use in her upcoming shows.

To enter this Thursday Giveaway: Just leave any comment here at ArtSnark's between now & noon (EST) next Thursday June 18th. 1 random winner will be chosen.

Please be sure your contact info is correct. You don't have to leave an email, as long as I can track you down easily through blogger. If I do not hear from you within 10 days of your name being drawn, I'll go back through the list and choose an alternate winner.

Once again, this week’s fabulous prize is a $20 merchandise certificate, for use in WillOaksStudio’s Etsy or ArtFire shop, to be used as a credit towards any total purchase. This includes shipping charges. So if you want a totally free piece of jewelry, find the piece you like & then subtract the shipping charge from the $20. The remaining total is what you have to spend on a new piece of jewelry. Karen states that “I will refund $20, max, through PayPal after normal check out. BUT there's no cash value (and no cash refunds if the entire amount isn't used) AND it must be "spent" before September 30, 2009 or it expires. "

A few days ago I was the lucky winner of a book giveaway over at Trial and Error. Artist & blogger, Jennifer WIlliams, has been doing a little destashing in her monthly giveaways. I hate to do this, but I've got to keep things moving.

Thursday Giveaways Part 2 - SlyViolet has something for you...

We'll start with just a peek

Today's offering is from the talented artisan, Miss Violet

She has a wonderful way with sparkly baubles & vintage bits

Even before I saw her creations, Miss Violet won me over with some lines from Lewis Carroll. But once I found her Etsy shop, SlyViolet, I was smitten. Her unique jewelry is full of fun details & repurposed bits. Most pieces are accompanied by a fabulous "history". When visiting her shop be sure to click on a few items to read their fascinating tales.

Her newest necklace, inspired by the Snark, is today's Thursday Giveaway prize. You guys are so lucky!! To play along just leave a comment on this blog before noon next Thursday. On May 28th one lucky winner will be randomly selected to receive SlyViolet's one of a kind piece, The Charming Snark Key!

She's also sent along some great text, which includes a special offer for ArtSnark readers. I figure, why tamper with perfection so here we go:

"He remarked to me then," said that mildest of men,
"If your Snark be a Snark, that is right:
Fetch it home by all means -- you may serve it with greens,
And it's handy for striking a light.

"You may seek it with thimbles -- and seek it with care;
You may hunt it with forks and hope;
You may threaten its life with a railway-share;
You may charm it with smiles and soap."

-Lewis Carroll, 'The Hunting of the Snark'

The Charming Snark Key

A brass skeleton key worked with copper wire, featuring a vintage ivory Mah Jongg tile, a piece of sea glass I found on a small beach in Hawai'i, amethyst, iolite, green garnet, Czech faceted glass, and Indian lampwork glass. Strung on black satin ribbon with plenty of extra, so you can tie a lovely bow with tails dangling elegantly at the back. 5" x 5" at widest points. The perfect offering for a temptable Snark.

Violet Ash creates one-of-a-kind Steampunk jewelry from her San Francisco Bay Area studio. She loves hunting through antique stores, estate sales, and flea markets, in search of those things which once served purpose but have since been abandoned. Each of her beautiful pieces contains at least one unusual vintage item, giving new life to these old treasures.

Her work can be found in private collections around the world, and her online storefronts, slyviolet.etsy.com and slyviolet.artfire.com

Special offers, updates on new jewelry posts, projects in progress, and general musings on art, life, and Steampunk philosophy can be found on Violet's Twitter: twitter.com/slyviolet

Violet is offering an additional gift for fine art/jewelry bloggers and Twitter users! Blog or retweet this giveaway (be sure to RT @slyviolet so she can see it, or include a link to the blog post in message to seller!), and any purchase made from her shop before June 21st will receive free domestic US shipping (or a discount on international shipping), courtesy of Miss Violet. Please be sure to mention this offer before submitting payment so that Violet may adjust the listing for you.

A hearty Thank You to Violet for generously donating to ArtSnark's Artifacts Thursday Givaways!

We Have A Winner.... and a new giveaway!

Meant to post this sooner but my internet was down for some reason...grrr....talk about bad timing!

By the time the world came back online (just in time to stop my withdrawal symptoms), my faithful assistant was at his play date. So I popped over to Random.org. Thanks to Lisa Falzon for pointing this site out in on her latest giveaway post, by the way.

A hearty congrats to random pick # 23 - Rukshana Hooda ! !
I'll be contacted you today, Rushana for your mailing info.

I'm digging this Thursday Giveaway thing!
By the great response,I think you are too. So let's do it again!

I've decided to try & make Thursday Giveaways a weekly feature. While I'll be contributing prizes, I'm also looking for others who'd like to donate. I'd like to stick with either items you've made or supplies for creating anything.

What is in it for you besides that warm & fuzzy feeling that you've made some one's day? Well, my last 2 random giveaways had almost 100 entries each. I'm guessing that will continue to increase once Thursday Giveaway goes weekly. Thursday's Feature will be all about you as well as your generous prize. With links to your shops, blogs, websites & what have you. I will also be promoting your prize (plus your talented & generous nature, of course) through a variety of online venues.

The 2 jewelry designers who donated prizes earlier this year WillsOakStudio & CelticKnot saw an increase in traffic in their shops & blogs during the contests.

So, what do you think? If you are interested in participating just contact me (my email's on my profile or just leave a comment) and we'll set something up. Till then, here is the next prize:
