Marchande de Fleurs

Marchande de Fleurs - digital collage

She to this earth belonged, where beauty fast
To direst fate is borne:
A rose, she lasted, as the roses last,
Only for one brief morn.

While this selection is from a poem to a friend whose daughter has died, it kept rattling around in my nut while I played with some travel photos today. (Click image to enlarge.)

I remembered the poem but not the poet. In my search I stumbled upon this lovely bit of music by Rafi Baladi.

He was inspired upon rereading Consolation and imagining Malherbe's visit to his friend. Here is Mr. Baldi's eloquent explanation from his Muziboo page:

"I read it again ten years ago (2000) and imagined him riding his horse to visit his friend on a dark rainy evening to deliver his Consolation to him. I imagined Du Périer open his countryside home and let him in. Each sipped a glass of wine on a chipped wooden table and Malherbre read his poem. Du Périer responded with gratitude commenting on Malherbre’s similar and earlier two tragedies with his own children. (Which is true) The peace of music is represented by two major sets of strings, one delivered by Malherbre and the other intervened, gently, by Du Périer."

New Thursday Giveaway - Pieces of Paris

Shakespeare & Co.

I can't believe it has been a whole month without a random drawing! Where did the time go?

Batobus on the Siene

Oh yeah -that's right....

I'm still floating on the cloud of lovely Paris memories,
so how about a faux-French giveaway?

I still have to unpack all of the wonderful bits & pieces found on the trip. Plus I've picked up additional Paris-themed goodies since returning including cute Eiffel Tower charms from GatheringSplendor.etsy.com.

Eiffel Tower Charm + photo from GatheringSpendor.etsy.com

Over the next 14 days I will collect some fun pieces into a lovely bundle - papers, ribbons, fabric, jewelry bits ... plus an original drawing/painting/collage or two.

I'll also include a couple of photo ATCs from the trip. We took hundreds of pictures - I've posted only a handful so far. If you missed them they are here, here here. I'll post more soon.

Am I tempting you yet? Leave a comment on my blog before 1 a.m. (EST) on June 16 and you will be entered in this great giveaway. On 6/16 one lucky winner will be randomly selected to take home everything in the package. Giveaway is open worldwide with free shipping to the winner. Marché aux Fleurs et Oiseaux (flower & bird market)

The Marché aux Fleurs (on the l'Île de la Cité, Paris) has been operating since 1808.

Seven days a week you can find all manner of flowers, trees & other greenery for sale.

Visit on a Sunday to take in the famous bird market.

You'll also find all sorts of small creatures. We spotted rabbits, turtles, fish and even a tarantula.

The guys have been asking for pet chickens for the past year. Here is Little Dude trying to figure out how to hide a couple of very noisy roosters in his suitcase.

He also begged for a song bird, but we stuck with flowers.

(this colorful photo was taken by my talented husband, by the way)

I hope you enjoyed our morning out. Click here for a fun 360 degree view of the market from 360cities.net (a very cool site).

Best wishes to you - hope you have a wonderful week!

A Few Paris Photos

mmmm...mmmm....macarons

Finally sharing a few pics from our wonderful trip to Paris. Each day we filled the camera... and our bellies.

We visited the Iron Lady of course. The top was closed so we took in the grand view from the 2nd floor. Every night we enjoyed the tower's lightshow from our amazing apartment on the edge of the Marais district. Really fantastic!

I asked the Little Dude for his Paris highlights. His #1 pick - "the playgrounds." This one is in the Luxembourg Gardens.

Ordering déjeuner - pommes frites, anyone?

I had some fun this morning playing with this photo taken in the Louvre. It still needs a bit of tweaking though.

One of my highlights was a visit to Giverny. The gardens were even more beautiful than I had imagined. Easy to see why Monet once said  "I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers."

Well, that's all I have time for just now. Will share more soon. Wishing you a wonderful day!

I Love Paris

Just returned from our wonderful trip. The original plan was to post a few pics during our travels, but the whirlwind tour kept me busy. We managed to fill the camera each day, so I'll share some photos soon. In the meantime enjoy the slideshow from KrystinaBorges and the always entertaining Les Negresses Vertes.

And here we are tired but content on the flight home.

Musical Monday - Dear Reader.... I'm babbling

Hey there. How have you been? Seems like I haven't Musical Monday'ed in ages! By the way you can catch more Dear Reader over at dearreadermusic.com (& all over youtube)

So what have you all been up to while I dropped of the face of the earth? I've been kinda unplugged lately & have missed keeping up with everyone's art & adventures. So if anyone is still out there.... whatcha up to?

Me? Kiddo's still keeping me on my toes. I'll admit to breathing a sigh of relief once school starts in about a month--ssshhh don't tell.

Then the catching up begins (again). Remember the studio/pigsty? Apparently the mess has been breeding while I've been away....

Yeah, I know, ewwww..... But it'll have to wait a while longer.

Little Dude & I are off to Maine later this week. It'll be a nice break. If I can figure out how to send photos from the camera to a borrowed PC, I'll post pics along the way. I can already taste the blueberries...and to swim in a lake without alligators again...woohoo!  My son thought I was pulling his leg when I told him you could to that - yep, he's a Florida Native.

Let's see...what else is up.... (warned you I'd be babbling)....

5 fun ATCs came in from the mixed media swap. Rather than brave the scary studio, I sent off a few from my ArtSnark Etsy shop that had been collection dust like The Siren here:

It was a great mix of trades that came in the mail. I'll scan & post them here tomorrow.
from parisperfect.com

Only other thing I've been up to is looking for a Paris rental for this fall. We'll go for a week or so. I'm very excited! (And I have to admit it is a lot of fun seeing the incredible variety of places to choose from.)

Have you visited this grand City Of Lights? I'm taking all suggestions, tips and random musings. Just pop me a line I'd love to hear about your favorite finds & sweet secrets....

Oh, Speaking of fun finds - did you catch last Thursday's visit with artist Risa Tritabaugh? If not click here. While you are there, check out her colorful painting Among The Flowers. Lucky for us, she's generously donated it for the 8/13 random drawing. Leave a comment on this blog before 1 a.m. (EST) 8/13 to enter this giveaway. (By the way drawing is only open to USA addresses- sorry Intl. folks).

Musical Monday - Paris Dreams

I got a package this weekend

that had me digging through dusty cds. Had an urge to listen to this Cole Porter cover. (Please don't judge by the photos in this slideshow - 'twas the clearest sound I could find for sharing)

Last month while visiting the wonderful blog StarryNightImpressions I entered a random drawing.

A number of lovely items were given out. Lucky lady that I am, I won a fun Paris collage made by StarryDeb herself:

I have never been to Paris but always enjoy window shopping over at starrydeborah.etsy.com and other spots with a French vibe.

By the way, did you know that if you visit Etsy's Geolocator you can search for handmade & vintage items by seller location? There is some great stuff coming out of Paris right now!

Know what else is cool? Just found out there is a chance I may visit the City of Lights later this year. Probably will only be for a couple days & I'll be traveling with a child. If anyone has suggestions for "must-see" or places to stay, please comment. I can find my way around many places but am a newbie when it comes to France.

Coincidentally, today's Mixed Media Monday prompt is Marie Antoinette. If you're a fan, jump over there & peruse the fun interpretations. Better yet if you have some Marie-inspired creations, pop on over & leave a link.

Back to the topic of Musical Monday, Diane is taking a break so Screaming Mimi is hosting today. Again, click through & play along if you have the time.

And finally- if you haven't yet entered the random drawing for Tortuga Tile Works Dios de los Muertos Mosiac, click here to check it out & leave a comment.

Tidying up some loose ends

While pretending to pick up the studio today I came across some unfinished pieces. Gave them a few tweaks & will put them in my Etsy shop, ArtSnark, tomorrow.

A month or so ago, the Melange art challenge prompt was Lace, followed soon after by Adventure. The prompts reminded me of this gentleman viewed from a slow moving train leaving the station. This photo was taken about 15 yrs ago in Conegliano, Italy. Since then, I'd added the ethereal legs so he'd have something to look at.

I came across the print tonight and enhanced with some watercolor pencils & markers. Some flashy little swarovski crystals jazz up the ruby slippers. My original plan was to put him in a shadow box with a variety of elements. Then I came across this faux-lace mat & thought it went with the theme.

I also found this little photo, Happy Plant and popped it into a black mat - fits in a 5" x 7" standard frame.

Happy Plant

There was also this scotch broom print. I had fun going over it with markers & colored pencils. While playing, I decided it might make a good background for one of the Idle ideas banging around in my nut. That's the IF prompt this week.... but I've been too idle to work on it.

Scotch Broom

Well, that's the hit & run tonight. Promise to feature Barbara Moustafa's awesome images soon.

Hope you've all had a great weekend! Oh, and if you haven't entered Thursday's Giveaway yet, click here for details. It's a great prize this week for 1 lucky winner!
