"Secrets" Revealed. Ships free worldwide

Secrets

"There is more to be feared from a closed mind than closed doors" -Frank Tyger

Finally got around to framing this piece from last Wednesday. The drawing in mounted under a hidden acid free mat that keeps it from touching the glass. Rustic frame & metal key are sprayed with a clear finishing coat. Whole thing measures just under 8" x 10" and is ready to hang. Available now in my ArtSnark etsy shop with free shipping worldwide. Click on image for more details.

While we're talking about Secrets, who the heck was Frank Tyger? I went off on a googling tangent today to find out more about the man behind so many quotes. Found a dead Wiki page & this on yahoo. He may have been a reporter in NJ, he may just be a cover for misc unattributed quotations..... the man remains a mystery. I challenge you to find out what you can about the elusive Frank Tyger. If you come up with anything, please share. I do love a good mystery!

Mix It Up With Melange Challenge - CHANGE

Hey there. How've you been? I've been a bit overwhelmed with life lately - leaving blogging & art by the wayside more than I'd like. But I think I've got things sorted out once again.

This week's Melange prompt is Change. The 1st thing that comes to mind is Alchemy. I've been rather obsessed with the idea of transmuting one thing into another as far back as I can recall. I think I've mentioned The alchemy website before but its an interesting read & has some cool art.

The pic on the top, Time Traveler, is my response to the challenge - I printed a digital collage & then went over it with pencil, markers, watercolor pencil, & ink. Started with a photo taken literally 1/2 of a lifetime ago. The big Four-Oh is next week. Don't ask me how; last time I looked I was only 2o. Talk about change!

When I'm messing with a piece I often listen to music. Sometimes I have a specific tune or musician in mind to set the mood. Other times (like last night) I go random till something gets the fingers flowing & then play it to death. (Just a little obsessive, but it works for me). Last night Sondre Lerche's Like Lazenby seemed to hit the spot. Perfect theme song for me lately too...

If you like listening to Sondre, have you checked out his Tiny Desk Concert on NPR video? CLICK HERE & then click on the video to play. I really enjoyed it. There's also a great interview from All Things Considered where he explains George Lazenby as muse, among other things - you can find it HERE (pop through & then click the listen now icon. The whole interview is good listen but the Lazenby bit is about 5 minutes in)

By the way, Time Traveler measures 5" x 7" and is mounted in an 8" x 10" acid free mat. It is now available in my ArtSnark etsy shop with free shipping and your choice of mat color.

Want to see more interpretations of change or add your own? Click Here to visit the Melange Team Blog and go to the comment section.

But before you go, check out tomorrow's prize - Harry Boardman's matted print Sunset Parking Lot, which will be given to 1 lucky winner at noon tomorrow (10/5). You can see the print at the bottom of Thursday's post. To enter this random drawing just leave a comment on this blog before then.

New Wall Sticker Giveaway for 2 Winners PLUS "Naughty" challenge piece

You know you have your secrets....

This week's Mix it up with Melange prompt is Naughty. Now how fun is that!

I'm entering this secrets journal. It was inspired by an antique french postcard. Originally the woman was made into a watercolor & rubber stamped art trading card. I scanned the card & altered it in my ancient copy of photoshop elements. After printing on petal inclusive paper, I embellished with pencils, watercolor, & metallic paint. I then burned the edges - guess she was a little too hot ( sorry couldn't resist).

Final piece was treated with a UV-resistant finish & then adhered to a blank book. This journal is available in the ArtSnark etsy shop with Free Shipping, by the way.

To see other Naughty pieces or add your own sometime this week, click here & go to Melange blog comments.

Music, Muse & Melange Transfer Challenge

It's Mmm..mmm..mmm...mmmonday!

Which M first? Musical Monday is the easiest place to start. Listening to Yusuf today while cobbling together my notes on tape & tile image transfers (see below). For more music & to share to your own tunes, click the MM button.

At Maternal Spark today, Monday's Muse wants to know - What is inspiring you this week?

My answer starts with yet another M - the Melange Blog Make a Transfer Challenge.

There are many ways to transfer an existing image from 1 place to another. Anything goes in this challenge - use printers, glass, fabric, paper, magazines, whatever. Here is the original post listing the (non) rules.

I decided to try something easy & went with a packing tape transfer. I used the contact paper transfer listed in Claudine Hellmuth's book Collage Discovery Workshop as a guide. I recommend this book, by the way - I have yet to try most of the techniques. But it is very easy to follow with great pictures and clear directions.

So here's what happened. Please note, I used the products I had on hand. Similar products by other brands should do the trick too.

I started with an original image that was laser printed onto basic copy paper over 2 years ago. (Yeah, I have some pack-rat issues). I popped the image a bit with colored pencils.

I taped over the image with clear packing tape & burnished with a bone folder.

More rubbing to make sure there are no air bubbles.

Soaked in water for several minutes.

Immediately, the piece curled up & kept sticking out of the water. I added more water & poked it a few times until it stayed submerged.

After 5-10 minutes I started gently rubbing off the wet paper. The ink stayed on the tape.

Still rubbing. Took a while to remove the last furry bits of paper that were only visible once dry. I just kept wetting & rubbing.

Here is the tape sticky side up. I was surprised it was still sticky after all the soaking.

Claudine Hellmuth adheres her transparent transfer to an altered playing card. I decided while my tranfer dried to use a white marble tile. Stamped the tile with this cool architectural stamp from Judikins. Pigment inks were used so that the line would soften a bit when sprayed with Krylon before the ink was completely dry (Figured this out while working on my last box)

Then I went in with a touch of color pencils & sprayed the tile with a Krylon Clear glossy finish.

After trimming the tape's edges, I glued it down with Liquitex gloss medium & varnish. I scraped across the tape's surface with the edge of my glue brush to remove air bubbles. An old credit card would work well too.

The contrasting finish was awkward (tape was too shiny), so I went over the whole piece with the gloss medium which I dry brushed again before it set. The faint texture of the brush strokes seems to bring it all together. You only see the strokes at certain angles. Viewed from the front, it has a uniform glossy finish. Now all is needs is some hanging hardware glued to the back.

Overall, this was a quick & easy process. A lot of fun too. If you give it a try, I'd love to see what you make. I have read though that you must start with a laser print or photocopy. Not an inkjet print, as the water will make the ink run.

To see more Image Transfer Techniques visit the Melange Blog. The comments on this Melange post have links to people's transfers. If you look over the past week's posts while you are there, You'll find several tutorials posted that show just how easy & fun image transfers can be

RTT- HC SVNT DRACONES

Here Be Dragons - Work in progress

Still working on a piece for last Wednesday's Mix It Up With Melange challenge to "use your favorite quote". I am a major quote geek & started several pieces before finally settling on this 1. Made some silly mistakes so I learned a lot today. My pigment inks were acting all wonky but I finally solved the problem with help from the site Art Without Anxiety .

This project has been fun though. Got to use some brass bits from my UK art-buddy, Julia. She sent me a wonderful package last month. A fun ATC with cool wooden stand. A bag of watch mechanisms & bits. Plus HobNobs (my favorites!) Thanks Julia!!

Work in progress

Hope to finish the quote box & post sometime Wednesday.Meantime, let 's see what else is up.....

Recently joined another ATC swap, this 1 over at Outsider Artists. If you like your art with a touch of the dark side, it may be just the place for you. I popped over there tonight & found out that one of my favorite artists (& one of the sweetest people I've ever "met" online), Izabella, has a 5 page spread in the Fall issue of Artful Blogging. I'm off to track down a copy ASAP. In the meantime you can get a sneak-peek here.

Izabella also runs the online artists' community Creative Souls - has an eclectic membership which also includes writers musicians & other creative folks. Worth checking out if you've not been there before - hey it's free. Who knows you might run into Michael deMeng or Richard Salley or some other fascinating members while nosing around

Hmmm.....sorry about the lack of Random. It is the tail end of Random Tuesday Thoughts today. Got my mind on my project & I bet the glaze has set.... so need to get back to it. For a greater variety of Random Thoughts click the button ... go on ....
